New Zealand Gasshuku with Sensei Tetsuji Nakamura

IOGKF Australian instructor, Sensei DJ Lambert, recently returned from a visit to New Zealands North Island, where he instructed at two IOGKF NZ Dojo's and trained with IOGKF World Chief Instructor, Sensei Tetsuji Nakamura.

Sensei Lambert conducted two Dojo seminars, one for the Wellington Dojo which had around 30 participants and for the Napier Dojo which had around 45 attendees.

The New Zealand organisation invited Sensei Tetsuji Nakamura, to travel from Canada to conduct the Gasshuku. Nakamura Sensei's lectures on Kata, in particular Sanchin, have been described as 'incredible' and his teaching style left all attendees feeling charged to keep continuing their training Okinawan Goju-ryu Karate-do.
The Gasshuku also feature group rotational training. The instructors for this included Nakamura Sensei, Australia's Sensei Lambert and IOGKF NZ senior instructors.

Some 120 participants attended and there is already great interest in bringing Nakamura Sensei back to the Oceania region soon.

A full report on the Nakamura Sensei's New Zealand visit and Sensei Lambert's Dojo visits, will be available in the December issue of the International Newsletter - OUT SOON!!!

IOGKF Australian Regional One Day Seminar Update

events.htmThe June 14 regional seminar was a great success! Although numbers were a little dissapointing, participants still came from Kotara Dojo in Newcaslte, the Sydney Dojo, Sensei Roses' Canberra Dojo and the Lambert Dojo in Goulburn.

events.htmTraining kicked off at 9:30am, with Sensei Lambert welcoming everybody and explaining the day would also be a chance for us to remember Anichi Sensei through our training. Sensei Lambert then began with a vigorous Junbi Undo which lasted a little over 40 minutes.

events.htmAfter this it was straight into Kata training, starting with Gekisai Dai Ichi. Sensei Lambert checked everyone's Kata with his big emphasis on footwork. Once he was happy, Sensei took the attendees through Gekisai Dai Ichi variation Bunkai, but from Kakie. All attendees really enjoyed seeing the Kata being applied, not only, different ways but from a different method in Kakie.

events.htmOnce finished, Sensei put everyone through a rigourous basic sequence, utilising the movements from the Gekisai Kata's. The sequence was then used to defend against 4 attacks. Sensei Lambert explained that Higaonna Sensei's goal for us is to put the Kata into Kumite and this was just one example of that.

events.htmFollowing this, the group went through Gekisai Dai Ni and Saifa Kata's, again with Sensei Lambert correcting and explaining a lot of the techniques. With Saifa, the Kata was broken down into short sequences and practiced and refined again and again.

events.htmSaifa Oyo Bunkai followed this and many commented that the applications were very different but still the same as the Kata. 'You can think outside the square with Bunkai, just stay true to the Kata and don't get fancy. Simple works - simple keeps you alive.' Sensei Lambert explained.

events.htmNext was the practice of Sanchin Kata. Sensei explained a lot about the technique and dangers of practicing Sanchin incorrectly. He showed the group different ways to test and work the sanchin posture and a few interesting tanden control exercises! Sensei also explained about Shime, its testing points and the what and what not's of its execution.

events.htmFollowing this Sensei Lambert explained Iri Kumi the way Higaonna Sensei had taught him. He also showed everyone how effective the Kata can be applied when practicing Kumite.

events.htmAfter a short break for lunch, a stretching seminar with champion Gymnast Teghan Bartlett-Miller was held. Teghan taught a 90 minute session in two parts. The first 45 minutes were spent going through the basic stretching exercises gymnasts do every session. It was interesting to notice nearly all the stretching was to be done with a partner - not alone.

events.htmThe second section was a strengthening and conditioning session, taking us through the exact workout gymnasts perform on a regular basis. I think it is safe to say many participants had sore abdominals on Monday morning!events.htm

events.htmThe success of this event has already prompted demand for future courses and more for 2009 are already in the pipeline. Sensei Lambert is available for regional courses in other cities and also for other styles, to book visit www.goulburnkarate.comevents.htm

events.htmThanks go to Sensei Janet Young, Teghan Bartlett-Miller and all who travelled, attended and supported our organisation! We look forward to seeing you all in Goulburn again soon!events.htm

Visit to Kokoro Dojo - Newcastle

Kokoro VisitOn Saturday, February 7, 2009 I visited Kokoro Dojo in Newcastle, New South Wales, with the kind permission of Sensei Brad Brown and Sensei Chris Larken.

I arrived around 9am for a 9:30am start. Driving up through the amazing scenery of the Hunter Valley and its many vineyards was really fantastic! Wine growing and produce, like Karate-do, has a lot of traditions dating back many centuries so I appreciated the views of the many yards flowing into the distance, in set patterns like Kata – it was very beautiful.

Arriving early gave me the time to catch up with my good friend Sensei Brad Brown and his lovely family, all of whom – as usual – welcomed me with open arms. We started at 9:30am and I appreciated the appearance from my other good friend and Australian joint Chief, Sensei Chris Larken.

We bowed in with 40 odd students ready to train and I started with a traditional Goju-ryu warm up, concentrating mainly on the technical aspects and breathing involved with the exercises we perform. I was very impressed with everybody’s enthusiasm; especially the young group of red pee-wees in the front line.

We then progressed onto some fitness and timing drills, starting in partners with one person lying on the ground, with the other completing jumping and turning drills in between their partners legs. We then moved onto some timing drills starting off with attacking and defensive moves, followed by defending and countering. All seemed to enjoy this training, even with the running thrown into it a bit later.

I then explained a little about elbow techniques to the class and took everyone through a basic combination drill, utilizing the five main waza used in Goju-ryu. From there I added a few applications, using some of the techniques we had just practiced, combined with take downs. It was good to see some partners really challenging each other with the training.

Kata was next on the agenda. We practiced Gekisai Dai Ichi and Gekisai Dai Ni all together, focusing on footwork and explanations of the techniques. The effort from everyone was very good and I was again impressed with the young junior grades.

I finished the session off with explanation of Kumite. I explained and demonstrated Iri Kumi 1, 2 and 3. It was great to see all students perfecting their technique and some challenging themselves against much larger and stronger opponents.

All in all I had a great time a Kokoro Dojo, I have visited there many times now and I always feel very welcome and respected. I received a lot of positive feedback from both Students and Parents about the session and everyone involved in the club has a very positive attitude to Karate-do training.

My thanks to Sensei Larken for taking time out of his busy schedule to come to the dojo and to Sensei Brad Brown and his team at Kokoro for allowing me to come and train once more – I appreciate it very much. I hope to host an instructor from Newcastle at my dojo in April for a Karate session.

I look forward to seeing all our Newcastle members at the Canberra Gasshuku on the 18th and 19th of April 2009!
